WARRINGTON North MP Helen Jones accused Treasury minister Danny Alexander of hitting the poorest with huge tax rates whilst making tax cuts for the wealthy.
At Treasury Questions the MP asked if the minister could explain why those on universal credit will be subject to a 76% marginal deduction rate on extra earnings.
She went on to ask: “Why do the government believe that wealthy people have to be incentivised by a tax cut, but the poorest people need to be incentivised by a huge tax rate?”
The minister did not address the question in his reply.
Speaking afterwards Helen Jones said: “It was disappointing that the minister failed to address the question I put to him. The government claim that they want to reduce taxation on working families but then subject those on universal credit to a whopping 76% tax on extra earnings.
“That is a huge disincentive for people who seek to earn extra for their families and it is in huge contrast to their policies towards the wealthy we are told need tax cuts to become incentivised to earn more.”
