Burst water main causing gridlock

A burst water main is being blamed for causing traffic chaos in Warrington town centre, with gridlock on Bridgefoot.
Emergency road works are currently ongoing at Sankey Way Roundabout. Two of three lanes are closed at Liverpool Road on the approach to Sankey Way
Roundabout, with two lanes closed on the circulatory and one lane closed on the Priestley Street approach to the roundabout.
This has had a knock on effect to Wilson Patten Street and Bridgefoot and Chester Road causing the whole town centre to be congested.
The road works have been caused United Utilities having a major burst on a 15″ water main at Sankey Green island.
The burst is situated in lanes two and three of the outbound carriageway opposite its junction with Thewlis Street.
Although the gullies are taking the majority of the water there is still excessive water holding on the carriageway.
The lanes can not be re-opened until tomorrow (Saturday) at 6am but highway chiefs are currently investigating reopening lane two to try and minimise the congestion.
