POLICE are investigating a serious fire at Warrington which is believed to have been an arson attack.
The blaze was at a house in Barrymore Avenue, Latchford in the early hours of today.
A family, including three children, escaped shaken but unharmed from the smoke-filled property.
Fire engines from Warrington and Stockton Heath were called to the incident.
They discovered a large fire in the garden which turned out to be a storage building against the wall of the house.
Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus tackled the blaze with a hose reel jet.
The storage building was completely destroyed and there was also fire damaged to the house.
Crews dampened down the whole area and used a ventilation unit to clear smoke from the house.
Detective Constable Simon Fisher said: Fortunately no one was injured as a result of this fire, however it had started to spread towards the house, where a man and woman and their three children were sleeping and the result could have been much worse.
“I would appeal to anyone who may know who is responsible for this dangerous incident to contact the police to ensure no one else is put at risk in this way.”
Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call police on 101 or the confidential Crimestoppers hotline on 0800 555 111.
Shortly before the blaze, a fire involving a commercial waste in broke out in Maybrook Place, Latchford but it is not clear if the incidents could be linked.
