A MOTION is to be put to next week’s meeting of Warrington Borough Council condemning Government cuts which are claimed to be having an unjust affected on the lives of many disabled people in the town.
The motion will be put by Cllr Hitesh Patel (pictured) and seconded by Cllr Maureen McLaughlin, asks the council to resolve to assess the equality impact of local decisions and policies and to continue to take full account of the needs of disabled people and their carers in policy decision making.
Cllr Patel and Cllr McLaughlin note that the council is proud of its pledge to “protect the most vulnerable”.
But they recognise that disabled people and their carers in Warrington are facing difficulties.
They note that the Government’s funding cuts and “ideology driven policy changes” are having an unjust and cumulative negative affect on the lives of many disabled people living in Warrington
In addition, they note that the Government’s intention to withdraw the requirement for conducting equality assessments when shaping future policies will further disadvantage disabled people in Warrington.
They add that Warrington has an excellent reputation in the field of disability awareness, thanks to the pioneering work of the Warrington Disability Forum, with the support of the council, local charities and housing associations.

Apart from making a political issue on a matter over which they have no control? What is the point of our local polticians debating this motion? They are taking up valuable council time just to harp on at one another along political lines. It will serve little purpose in protecting those most vulnerable locally and those on whom they are dependent. The debate will be just as much “ideologically driven” as the policy changes out of their control, they will criticize.
When will our local politicans confine themselves to local matters and stop aping the national politicians?
