RUGBY League fans from Warrington are being invited to take part in a charity walk to raise money to safeguard the game’s future.
RFL charity “Rugby League Cares” has teamed up with the Tran Pennine Trail for the “Founder’s Walk which will take place across northern England ahead of the Rugby League World Cup.
The walk will take in the entire length of the trail and will take place over seven days from Friday October 18 to Thursday October 24.
There will be five starting points, culminating in a final walk to the birthplace of Rugby League, the George Hotel, Huddersfield.
The Warrington leg of the walk goes from Halton Stadium to Lymm Ranger Centre on Monday October 21.
Aim of the walk is to raise money to help protect Rugby League’s heritage and future and the welfare of badly injured players.
Warrington Borough Council is one of 28 authorities supporting sections of the route.
The walk is free to enter but participants need to register via the Rugby League Cares website and commit to raising funds for the charity.
Cllr Linda Dirir (pictured), Warrington Borough Council’s lead member for highways, transportation and climate change, Cllr David Keane, lead member for environment and public protection and other councillors, will be taking part in the walk.
Cllr Dirir said: “Given Warrington’s links with both the Trans Pennine Trail and Rugby League, it was essential that we seized this exciting opportunity to be involved.
“As well as doing something for charity and raising money we are also celebrating the start of the international rugby tournament coming to the borough. It’s a great opportunity to re-engage with nature and do some walking along fantastic scenic routes.
“If you haven’t already walked along the Trans Pennine Trail it’s something you need to do. People can do the Warrington leg or the whole walk – get as involved as you like!
“We want as many people as possible to get involved and join us to help raise money for the Rugby League.”
