WARRINGTON Wolves hooker Micky Higham won the coveted Player of the Year Award the club’s annual End of Season dinner at The Halliwell Jones Stadium last night.
Players, coaches, staff, sponsors and supporters gathered to reflect on the season’s achievements so far and looked ahead to the play-offs and the business end of the year.
Sky Sports’ Angela Powers compered the evening as Higham went away with two awards having impressed throughout the season with his consistency and attacking ability.
Simon Grix, who has proven himself as a reliable utility player with 27 appearances this season, picked up the Supporters’ Trust award.
Other winners on the night were: Stefan Ratchford, (Pictured right with Adrian Morley) who won the players’ vote; Tyrone McCarthy, for his contribution to the community; Jacque Peet, an upcoming talent in the U19s Academy side; and Nicola Bell, who was recognised for her hard work and commitment in managing our greatly improved retail merchandise operation.
Commenting on Higham’s award Head of coaching and rugby Tony Smith said: “He is very deserved of this award. I’ve watched this guy for the most of his career in the top grade and watched him progress. He has always been an outstanding player and very quick out of dummy half – always threatening in terms of his attacking prowess. I’ve watched him develop over the years and he is far more than that now; he’s a very solid defender, a good support player and his awareness of Rugby League is a whole lot better. It just shows, stick with it and keep striving as he is now coming up with some of his best seasons. He’s played second fiddle to a lot people over many years and was seen only as a bench player for years behind some very good players but he’s been able to handle those situations and rise to the challenge of them. He now often finds himself as a starting player. I’m really proud to pass the award on to Micky.”
The evening concluded with club ambassador Alex Murphy OBE paying tribute to those players moving on at the end of the year: Adrian Morley, Garreth Carvell and Mike Cooper.
Another player believed to be heading off at the end of the season is full-back Brett Hodgson, although nothing has been confirmed by the club.
Meanwhile former fans’ favourite Kevin Penny, who has been impressing at the club’s feeder club Swinton Lions, is believed to have been offered a three-year-deal to return to the Halliwell Jones Stadium.
