From broken neck to head of rugby

A rugby player who was left paralysed following a freak sporting accident has bounced back to be named head of rugby at Lymm Rugby Union Club.
Alex ‘Bosh’ Bennett has been named Chairman of Playing just 18 months after breaking his neck on the rugby pitch playing for Lymm.
Commenting on his appointment Alex said:‘How could I stay away any longer? From total paralysis to Chairman of Rugby inside 18 months, that wouldn’t have been possible without all that rugby has given me, or without Lymm RFC.
‘From my perspective the Club has supported me through thick and thin, as has the rugby fraternity. This role allows me to give something back to my club and the sport but also will help me get back to normal life. As I get stronger I will be able to give more and more theoretically.’
Alex added; ‘Lymm is a beautiful, amateur rugby club that hold dear all that is so magnificent about our sport. The Club as a whole values its community and has the very best Mini, Junior and Colts environment I’ve ever seen. The future, in terms of talent and development, is very bright and my job should be relatively simple!’
As an amateur club Alex also recognises the challenges ahead but is very optimistic. ‘At a senior level we are playing at National Level Three, Midlands Division this season, which, considering we are strictly amateur, is outstanding.
‘Whilst developing our own home grown senior coaches we will have international players coaching specialist sessions. We also have our local Lymm resident, Premiership referee Trevor Fisher coaching us all on the subtlety and nuances of the laws of the game.’
Alex’s vision for rugby at Lymm is very clear: ‘We aspire to provide the highest possible level of rugby union without paying our players, yet providing both a coaching and playing environment of the highest professional standard.’
President of Lymm Rugby Club, Simon Plumb added: ‘Bosh is a remarkable man in many ways. We are proud and delighted he has volunteered to take this role in a key period of Lymm Rugby Club’s development. His background in terms of experience is second-to-none and we look forward to building on the success we have achieved to date.’
After suffering his injury the rugby union community rallied to Bosh who has made a remarkable recovery to get back on his feet.
