RSPCA appeals for help from public

THE Warrington and Halton branch of the RSPCA is making an appeal for help to continue its work protecting and finding new homes for the unwanted and maltreated dogs, cats and other pets in the area.
From its base at the Animal Centre in Warrington, the branch helps hundreds of animals each year to find new homes.
It provides a unique service to the local community because unlike other animal shelters, it never puts down a healthy animal but cares for them until they find a new loving home. And, because the branch receives no funding from the national RSPCA, it relies on the work, donations and goodwill of local people, volunteers and staff to ensure that it can carry on its essential work.
Branch chairman Cathy Mitchell said: “Like many organisations in all walks of life we have been hit hard by the recession.
“We rely on the generosity of the people of Warrington, Runcorn, Widnes, St Helens and the surrounding areas to ensure we can help as many neglected, abused and unwanted animals as possible.
“We now need their time and money more than ever as we seek to do all the things we‘d like to do, so we are appealing to everybody in the area to help us raise £60,000 over the next six months to secure the future of the animal centre and branch.
“Because we are committed to our principle of not putting to sleep any healthy pet, without us the animals face a very uncertain future indeed.’
One of the pets that the centre has helped recently is Misha (pictured), a three-year-old year old Staffordshire bull terrier that was severely mistreated by its former owners including regular beatings.
Misha was horribly neglected and arrived at the centre suffering from a number of physical ailments including a chronic ear condition that requires ongoing treatment.
Slowly the staff at the centre nursed her back to health until they found a new home for her.
Cathy said: “Misha’s story is dreadful, but it has a happy ending. “However things might have been very different if the centre didn’t exist to help her and hundreds of animals like her. That is why we are appealing to the ongoing generosity of the people of the Warrington and Halton to help us give these animals a commitment to ongoing care until they find a new home.”
Donations can be given at the Animal Centre on Slutcher’s Lane, Warrington, or through its website or by volunteering in fundraising activities.
