John Edward Lowe, of Marsh House Lane, Warrington, has been remanded in custody by Halton Magistrates until August 20 charged with causing grievous bodily harm to Mr Brown, also of Warrington.
Prosecutors are now considering changing the charge to either murder or manslaughter.
Mr Brown (pictured right) was taken to hospital in Warrington and subsequently transferred to Walton Hospital, Liverpool where he died on Sunday afternoon with members of his family at his bedside.
Members of Mr Brown’s family are said to be devastated at their loss and have requested to be left in peace at this difficult time.
