GOLDEN Gates Housing Trust scooped the Corporate and Social Responsibility Award at the Warrington Business Awards.
Judges were impressed by the commitment shown by the Trust in reducing its impact on the environment and supporting its tenants deal with rising energy prices. Since its launch in 2010, GGHT’s Board has set a series of ambitious targets around renewable energy, as it aims to become a leader in energy efficiency.
By the end of last year the Trust had installed renewable technology in 924 homes, making up 11 per cent of their overall housing stock. They have also set about on a huge investment programme to modernise and improve the energy efficiency of all tenants’ homes, installing loft and cavity wall insulation and fitting new double glazed windows and efficient central heating systems.
The Trust’s work on renewables has helped to create and support three full-time jobs for the local economy and achieved carbon savings of 700 tonnes per year. Tenants have benefitted from savings on their energy bills of £130,000 per year as a result of PV installations and £22,000 from solar thermal installations.
Earlier this year the Trust was the only housing provider to reach the final of the 2013 British Renewable Energy Awards.
After winning the award, GGHT chair, Roy Smith, said: “We are delighted to have won the award for corporate and social responsibility. As an organisation we take our responsibility in supporting our tenants and improving their local communities extremely seriously. Our renewables team have made some fantastic achievements over the last two years in delivering new technology and affordable warmth, helping our tenants to escape fuel poverty and improve the quality of their lives. Winning this award is a fantastic reward for the hard work our team have put in.”
