Drugs recovery course – in prison

A DRUGS recovery course at Warrington’s Risley Prison is so successful there is a waiting list.
The latest group of prisoners have completed the course and have graduated at a special ceremony at the prison.
CRI is responsible for delivering an integrated substance misuse treatment service called Pathways to Recovery at the prison and on behalf of Warrington Borough Council’s Drug and Alcohol Action Team (DAAT).
The Pathways to Recovery team provides a holistic approach to beating addictions.
As part of the treatment pathway, prisoners take part in a 12-week course that provides daily support in the form of 1-1, group work, mindfulness and relaxation techniques, gym sessions and much more.
After graduation prisoners are supported to sustain their recovery in the prison and in preparation for release at the end of their custodial sentence.
This is the second group of prisoners to graduate since the service went live in January.
Brian Johnson, prisoner governor for C Wing, presented certificates to the graduates who made their own caps to commemorate the occasion.
CRI’s team leader, Mick Fowler said: “Our team consists of clinical staff, recovery workers and specialists who strive to turn people’s lives around from the throes of addiction. Our clients are provided with an opportunity to build a recovery focussed lifestyle underpinned by an ethos around right living.
“The graduation in itself for our clients and also staff can be a very emotional occasion in what could be described as the start of a new life in front of them and we are very proud of all their achievements.”
Cllr Pat Wright (pictured), the council’s member for health and adult services, said: “By working so well together the DAAT and CRI are leading the way when it comes to supporting people and helping them beat their addictions. I am delighted that the Recovery Group is clearly enjoying much success and people are being given the opportunity to turn
their lives around for the better.”
A new group of prisoners has just started the 12 week programme and many more people have joined the waiting list.
