Help get us an EU referendum

WARRINGTON South MP David Mowat is urging people from the town to help secure the first EU referendum in 40 years.
This follows the news that Prime Minister David Cameron has launched a new campaign website, www.letbritaindecide.com which makes it simple for people to join the campaign to back the bill about to go through Parliament.
The bill would pave the way for a vote in 2017, after a full renegotiation.
Mr Mowat (pictured) said: “Britain deserves a vote. It’s been nearly 40 years since the British people last had their say on Europe.
“People feel the EU is heading in a direction they don’t want and didn’t sign up to.
“That is why Conservatives want to give Britain a clear vote – in or out – before the end of 2017, after a full renegotiation of our terms of membership.
“A draft bill to make this happen will soon be debated by MPs – but, crucially, it needs the support of other political parties to pass. “Britain needs everyone to build public pressure on this. That’s why we are launching LetBritainDecide.com – to give people a voice.
“Please sign up at http://www.letbritaindecide.com/and make your voice heard.”

  1. This is all a sham to try and get the Tories back in at the next election by riding on the anti-EU wave created by UKIP.

The Tories have no intentions of making it as easy as they try and kid us….”oh lets have a chat with Brussels to try and win back a few lost powers and then we can decide”….. No Mowatt, Cameron et al… we want a referendum NOW… the one you lying politicians all promised us years ago. Europe is stealing our identity and our money and allowing workers to come and steal the low paid jobs OUR kids should be doing…… We don’t need Europe half as much as they need us; they need our money to bail out the failing economies and the failed euro experiment…. get us out and get us out now. They will see the level of feeling at the next euro elections where UKIP will wipe the board and put an end to the main parties gravy train for retired and failed mainstream politicians

  2. That they might well do, but in so doing will replace them with UKIP trough snufflers, who like Mr Farage and the others will pocket upwards of £250,000 per year and do precisely nothing, except go on a campaign of self publicity at taxpayers’ expense. In terms of business, we do need to trade with other European countries, our home market simply isn’t big enough on its own. Regarding stealing jobs, in some instances our people are not up to the mark and often so poorly educated that they are unemployable. The old concept of the EEC was a great idea, ruined by power mad low quality politicians and bureaucrats who turned it in to the EU. If there was an in/out referendum tomorrow I think the result would be very close, and I must admit I couldn’t call the result.

  3. Why are politicians so frightened of democracy? The truth is: professional politicians genuinely believe the public is not bright enough to decide major issues. The major parties are predominantly similar shades of the same thing, so there will be no sea change on anything. We should get a vote on the Human Rights Act, membership of the EU, or at least on the accession of new countries whose citizens have different values to our own. Come on, Mr Mowat, push for an earlier referendum! 2017 just might not happen and our island is visibly changing by the day.

  4. Majority of the population would also ask for a referendum on return of capital punishment , but as you say Chris the polititians have no guts to represent the views of the populace
