WARRINGTON is heading for its busiest weekend of the summer – three days of activities which should bring the whole town together.
Tomorrow (Friday) will see thousands lining the town centre streets as what is believed to be the 179th Walking Day gets under way.
But the weekend will also celebrate Armed Forces Day, the granting of the Freedom of the Borough to 75 Engineer Regiment, the MELA Festival in Queen’s Gardens and various other activities.
Residents are invited to join in some or all of the events of an extraordinary weekend.
Walking Day will start tomorrow at 10.30am when the historic procession leaves the Town Hall lawn to wend its way through the town.
The procession will follow Sankey Street, Arpley Street, Museum Street, St Austin’s Lane and Friars Gate, where it will then turn right into Bridge Street to U-turn near Bridge Foot. It will then return up Bridge Street to Market Gate and Horsemarket Street.
Armed Forces Day is on Saturday, starting from 9.30am when the town will fly the Armed Forces flag in honour of servicemen and women.
The borough council has granted the honour of the Freedom of the Borough to 75 Engineer Regiment (TA) in recognition of the long and close association between the authority and the regiment.
Celebrations will begin with the Freedom of the Borough march through the town centre.
From 9.30am a Mayoral reception will take place at the Town Hall and
the flag will be flying.
The freedom march will start at 10.15am at the Town Hall, make its way through the town centre and conclude with a medal presentation and musical display from the military band in Queens Gardens, ending at about 2pm.
The Mayor, Cllr Peter Carey, will then visit another special event – the annual Tom Sephton Memorial rugby tournament at Crosfields recreation ground, which starts at 3pm.
Warrington Market will host its annual classic transport show on Saturday, from 10am to 4pm.
Many regional clubs will travel into the town to showcase their vehicles, including North West Casual Classics, St Helens Classic Car Club, the Ford Sidevalve owners club and the St Helens Bus Museum.
There will be chance to sit in a Formula 1 car and see a whole array of classic transport on display. The day will finish at 4pm.
Also on Saturday, the Mayor will be going to the official opening of the refurbished Salvation Army
Citadel. The ceremony will be followed by a service of dedication and a buffet.
On Sunday, Warrington MELA, from 11am to 4pm will be a colourful celebration of Warrington’s different cultures and communities. Queens Gardens will be awash with dancers, local singers and Bollywood music as Warrington celebrates the variety of cultures in the town.
MELA’s are traditionally an Asian celebration but WECA (Warrington Ethnic
Communities Association) decided to break away from the norm and instead celebrate the rich and diverse cultures of Warrington.
The day will consist of events ranging from Bhangra Dancing to Polish and Russian dancing, local singers and Bollywood Music and more. There will also be the opportunity to sample cuisine from around the world and plenty to keep the kids occupied with fairground rides, a bouncy castle and much more.
