GREAT Sankey High School came away with two trophies at the Warrington Schools Rugby League finals at the Halliwell Jones Stadium.
The Year 8s saw off their Sir Thomas Boteler counterparts 62-4 to claim the John Bevan Trophy, with Liam Hampson earning the man of the match award, selected by Mike Nicholas and Tyrone McCarthy’s.
They also won the Year 9 Final and the Paul Cullen trophy, thanks to a 24-12 win over William Beaumont, with Louis Wainwright selected as the game’s best player.
William Beaumont did claim a trophy on the day, winning the Year 7 final 26-0 over Cardinal Newman, and Jack Wright was selected as man of the match by LiveWire chairman Alan Yates.
Rounding off the day was the Year 10 Final between Cardinal Newman and Penketh, which Newman won 24-16, with Alex Stott chosen as man of the match.
Lee Westwood, community Rugby League coach, said: “Last year’s finals were a huge success with the players involved still talking about it to this day and this year has been no different with some fantastic Rugby League on display from all the teams. It is great to be able to hold these fixtures at the prestigious venue of The Halliwell Jones Stadium and to have Warrington legends past and present on hand to present the trophies is great for everyone involved.”
John Bastian, Wolves’ director of youth development, added: “It was great to see all the Warrington junior players experiencing playing Rugby League at The Halliwell Jones Stadium.
“All of the finals were well contested, but the main priority was that the young players were enjoying themselves playing Rugby League. Credit needs to be given to the schools and the community Rugby League staff for the hard work that they put in during the lead up to the finals.”
