WARRINGTON Wolves rugby stars will try their hand at cricket ahead of a charity game at Grappenhall Cricket Club next month.
Ben Westwood will be picking out the best cricketers at the Wolves in the next few weeks for the event, which is raising funds for his testimonial, the Grappenhall Cricket Club Pavilion Fund and the Andrew Flintoff Foundation.
The game takes place on Tuesday July 30, ahead of an England Legends v Australia Legends game at 4pm.
Andrew Flintoff will be leading the English team, and legends expected to play include Warringtonian Neil Fairbrother, Dominic Cork, Mark Ramprakash, Jason Gillespie and Simon Katich.
Westwood said: “It’s not only for us to try something different but as a club of Warrington we wanted to help another sporting club in the community and it’s great to get behind this. Freddie Flintoff is a star and it will be nice to meet him, shake his hand and see him in action too.”
In Ashes year, the Warrington team could feature Australians Brett Hodgson, Trent Waterhouse and the Monaghan brothers.
Neil Fairbrother the former Lancashire and England batsman is one of the organisers of the event.
He said: “This day came about because two years ago we did a similar day – we had a team of England legends down to play the club and what started off as a small day out ended up with 2,000 people at the ground. With it being Ashes year we thought we’d make it bigger – what better way than to invite Ben and Warrington Wolves, the local legends down – instead of just one team of legends we’ve got three! It should be a great day.”
Tickets are now available for the day from the Wolfware store.
