Labour set to choose election candidate

WARRINGTON South Labour Party is set to choose its Parliamentary Candidate for the 2015 General Election – with former challenger Nick Bent (pictured right) believed to be a firm favourite to take on sitting MP David Mowat.
A strong field of five candidates has been drawn for its shortlist for the parliamentary selection after a total of eleven people applied to be the candidate in the seat for the 2015 General Election.
The five shortlisted candidates are: Gillian Troughton, Javed Iqbal, Adam Mohammed, Sharon Connor and Nick Bent.
The final choice of the candidate rests with the 400 members of the local Labour Party at a special Hustings event on Saturday, June 15 at the USDAW office at Centre Park.
The Warrington South Parliamentary Selection is not affected in any way by the top-level Labour Party inquiry into Warrington, announced last week, that was triggered by the recent Police investigation into alleged computer hacking.
Warrington South is a “bell-weather” key marginal constituency. Labour lost the seat to the Conservative’s David Mowat by just 1,500 votes at the 2010 General Election.
Labour believe it is one of the Tories most vulnerable 40 seats across the country.
The Labour Party has a list of 106 target seats across Britain that it wants to win back from the Conservatives or LibDems – Warrington South is high on this list at number 22.
Chair of the Constituency Party, Jane Whalen from Penketh, said: “There is a lot at stake because unless we remove the local Tory MP we will not get David Cameron and George Osborne out of Downing Street, and Labour is the only party
that can beat the Tories here. Whoever our candidate is, we are optimistic we can win the trust of a majority of local voters.”
Since the 2010 General Election, Warrington South Labour Party has made impressive electoral gains right across the constituency at the expense of both the Conservatives and the LibDems, and Labour victories in Warrington South have
played the key role in winning back Labour control at Warrington town hall.
Labour list their highlights of the last three years as:

·Quadrupling the number of Labour Borough Councillors
·Trebling the number of Labour Parish Councillors
·Winning Borough and Parish seats to the south of the Ship Canal for the first time in decades in places such as Lymm, Stockton Heath and Grappenhall
·Winning a big majority on Great Sankey Parish Council
·Creating a thriving Warrington Young Labour group, chaired by Tom Jennings (Labour’s candidate in the Grappenhall North parish by-election on June 20th)
·Regular street stalls and campaign events in town and village centres to engage with voters
