Golf plan thrown out – again

PLANS for a golf driving range on farmland near Warrington have been thrown out for a second time.
The borough council’s development management committee voted to refuse permission for the 20-bay driving range on land between Joy Lane and Wright Lane, Burtonwood after hearing of strong local opposition.
Among objectors was leader of the borough council Terry O’Neill (pictured), who represents Burtonwood and lives in the village.
Eight other nearby residents lodged objections, as did Burtonwood and Westbrook Parish Council.
A similar plan was put forward in April 2005 but was refused because of the visual impact on a rural setting, perceived harm to neighbours and encroachment onto the landscaped buffer area forming the boundary of the adjacent Omega development area.
Cllr O’Neill expressed concern for the impact of the development on the precious Green Belt around Burtonwood.
Objectors also expressed concern about increased traffic problems, loss of open green space,
noise, light pollution, loss of trees and wildlife habitat and anti-social behaviour. Loss of agricultural land was also mentioned
The plans included a single-storey building, fencing, car parking and 20 golf driving bays, a teaching area, reception and office areas, toilets, changing rooms and car parking for 30 vehicles. .
Planning officers said the main building had been significantly reduced in size in the new proposals and recommended the scheme be approved.
But Cllr Sheila Woodyatt said it would still be a large building, some 94 metres in length and nearly as high as a house.
It would have a detrimental effect on the setting of the Green Belt.
