WARRINGTON will be marking Samoan Independence Day in South Pacific style on Saturday (June 1) as part of the Rugby League World Cup celebrations.
The town will host the Samoan team during the Rugby League World Cup later this year, and there is a range of exciting events planned for the day, including flash mobs and beach parties.
There will be children’s face painting in Golden Square between 11am and 4pm, and players from Warrington Wolves will also drop in to see the Rugby League World Cup trophy.
The Samoan beach party will take place between 5-8pm at Orford Jubilee Neighbourhood Hub featuring inflatables and an under water disco.
The Warrington Volleyball club will also be hosting beach volleyball lessons and a competition in the sports hall.
Jan Souness, chair of the local RLWC2013 group, said: “We hope everyone gets involved with the brilliant activities taking place and celebrates Samoan Independence Day with us. As the tournament gets closer we want the whole town to pledge their support to Samoa and we want people to come from far and wide to mark this day with us.”
Employees from the council will be dressing in Samoan team colours (white, blue and red) on Friday (May 31) in aid of the day.
Cllr Terry O’Neill, leader of Warrington Borough Council, said: “The local economy is set for a huge boost later this year when the tournament brings 20,000 visitors to the town and Warrington will reinforce its place as the rugby capital of the North West.”
It is 51 years since Samoa gained independence from New Zealand.
