Love your market fortnight!

WARRINGTON Market has joined forces with markets across the country to celebrate ‘love your local market fortnight’.
Starting today (Wednesday) until Wednesday May 29 a whole host of events are taking place to encourage people to take a fresh look at their own local market.
Market manager Steve Pickering recently spoke at an event in the House of Commons to kick-start the campaign.
Steve took a local success story along to London with him – Alison Roberts who runs her ‘Alison Loves to Bake’ business in Warrington Market. Alison baked a cake especially for the occasion and it caused quite a stir at the event!
Alison also bakes cake characters of local figures and these have been cleverly animated into a film to promote our local market. Check out the film click here!
Meanwhile there will be a series of specialist markets and local events across the fortnight in Warrington including –

•Thursday 16 – History tours with Mark Olly
•Saturday 18 – Warrington Food Festival, including a vintage market and green market
•Monday 20 – 1920’s karaoke
•Saturday 25 – Warrington Teenage Market
•Saturday 25 – National Family Day
•Wednesday 29 – Where’s Wally? How many Wally’s does it take to fill Time Square – let’s see!

The earliest documentary evidence of Warrington market dates back to the year 1255. At the time the local population was around 600 people. Today the market serves the local population of more than 200,000.
Every stall has a tale to tell from true stories to fascinating facts and they even have the answers to mysteries including whatever happened to the old market clock? And, why is the Corner Coffee Bar in the middle?
All is revealed during a series of guided tours around the market, presented by Television Historian and Presenter Mark Olly.
Steve added: “The market today plays a vital role in our town’s cultural heritage, and I think it important to share our history. Everyone is welcome to come along and share memories of the market in this fun event.”
Tours start from 9.30am tomorrow, Thursday May 16, with each tour lasting approximately 40 minutes starting from the main entrance by Sweeney’s Butchers.
If you would like to take part in any of these events or want to know more please contact the market information desk on 01925 632571 or email [email protected]
