WARRINGTON Home Improvement Agency (Whia) have scooped a national award for their work repairing, improving and adapting homes.
Whia, which works together with the council and Warrington Housing Association, helps older, disabled or vulnerable people and families on low incomes, and were awarded the Foundations Home Improvement Agency of the Year 2013 in London.
Geraldine Kiddle, WHIA Manager, said: “We are delighted to be recognised for the good work we do helping older people and hope that we can raise awareness in the community and reach more people – that’s what we are here to do.
“The difference that it makes by providing practical assistance for example, getting heating systems repaired and ensuring our clients feel safe at home, gives us a real sense of fulfilment and the award is just the icing on the cake.”
Foundations is the national body for home improvement agency and handypersons services and has recognised the Warrington agency for exemplifying the model of a successful Home Improvement Agency, which is able to expand the range of services provided to its clients, while operating in a time of austerity by identifying new sources of funding to ensure sustainability.
Whia has a successful track record and not only increased its number of clients by 130% over the last three years but has also been able to develop a wide range of practical services including gardening, free emergency repairs along with a range of funding options for clients.
Cllr David Keane, executive board member for environment and public protection for Warrington Borough Council, added: “This Warrington agency is a leader in the field, providing a crucial service to older home owners, and we’re delighted that their success has been recognised. The council and Warrington Housing Association are committed to working with Whia on providing services to meet the needs of older people in Warrington.”
