Work starts at old Woolston High

WORK has started on the re-development of the former Woolston High School to provide improved facilities for children and young people with special education needs.
The £6m project at the site, on Holes Lane, is due to be completed in spring 2014, and will provide high quality, modern and suitable education facilities for children attending Fox Wood Community Special School and Green Lane Community Special School.
Once accommodation is available, all staff and pupils from these two schools will relocate to Woolston and operate as two separate co-located schools on the same site, sharing the new specialist teaching, learning and therapy facilities.
One of the existing Woolston High School buildings will also be refitted to accommodate Warrington’s first post-16 education centre for young people with special needs, giving more 16-25 year olds with special needs the chance to continue their education in the town.
Cllr Colin Froggatt, executive board member for children and young people’s services at the council, said: “We are delighted to mark the start of this work on what is an exceptional addition to Warrington’s educational facilities. When built, the new school will be a great asset to the town and will provide a flexible, modern and streamlined approach to special needs education.”
Builders Mansell and Warrington Borough Council held a ceremony on Monday to mark the start of the construction work.
The ceremony was attended by representatives from the council including the Mayor, Councillor Froggatt, head teachers and pupils from Green Lane and Fox Wood Schools and members of the Mansell team.
