A COUNCILLOR who has condemned himself to the “village stocks” in aid of charity, is pledging a memorable day at the annual Culcheth and Glazebury Community Day this coming May Day Bank Holiday, (Monday May 6).
Cllr Chris Vobe is encouraging peopleto turn out in force at the event which will see him place himself in some stocks in aid of the charity Jo’s Cervical Cancer Trust – a charity set up to support women and their families affected by cervical cancer.
Those attending on the day will be able to make a small contribution to Jo’s Trust in exchange for throwing sponges at Cllr Vobe. He has also set up a “Just Giving” page for anyone interested in sponsoring him if they are unable to attend next Monday.
Cllr Vobe (pictured right) said: “People attending on the day will be able to take part by donating a small amount to throw some sponges. But for those who aren’t able to make it, my Just Giving page allows you to sponsor me.
“For every £10 donated on Just Giving, my colleagues on the Parish Council will throw a couple of extra soaked sponges on your behalf!”

Meanwhile the village’s annual Community Day will take place on the village green, with a number of original acts participating. The event aims to raise as much money as possible for local charities and worthwhile causes.
Cllr Vobe added: “This year’s Community Day is designed to be a unique event, planned so that there is ‘something for everyone’.
“We will be celebrating the 50th anniversary of ‘Doctor Who’ with a visit from the world’s most famous police telephone box, some of the Doctor’s most memorable foes – and even the Time Lord himself!
“We’re also looking forward to performances from Dr. Diablo and his incredible fire-eating show, as well as one of the country’s last remaining professional sword swallowers.
“This year, Community Day won’t be confined to the village green either. We’ll be hosting the white-knuckle Sudden Impact ride in the centre of the village, as well holding the Great Culcheth Bake-Off in the church hall.”
Cllr Vobe also promised that there would be an array of competitions and prize draws for both young and old throughout the day. Prizes are on offer for the winner of the “Great Culcheth Bake-off”, which is open to any person of any age and will be judged by a local baking expert. For younger children, there will be a “Find the Dalek” treasure hunt-style contest, with prizes kindly donated by local business, Forget Me Not Toys and Books.
Music will be provided by the Tyldsley Brass Band and younger children can look forward to two performances from entertainer Trumble the Clown.
