FORMER Warrington Collegiate student Ashley Terron is stepping up his training programme ahead of representing the UK at Worldskills 2013 in Leipzig, Germany.
Worldskills is the largest international skills competition in the world, and sees around 1000 young people, aged 18-25, compete for medals in more than 40 different skills including Electrical Installation, Welding, Bricklaying, Cooking and Landscape Gardening.
The 20-year-old, who studied Brickwork at the college on Winwick Road, said: “It is a huge honour to have been selected for Team UK. I’m absolutely over the moon and really focusing on coming back with the gold medal. The next few months are going to be tough as I’ll be in training for the event.
“I really hope the whole of the country gets behind Team UK like they did for our Olympic Team.
“I wouldn’t be where I am today without my 3 years training at Warrington Collegiate so I’m delighted to be able to share my success with the college. From starting my apprenticeship I have always aspired to be the best. Representing the UK in Leipzig has been my ultimate dream.”
Ashley is no stranger to international events, having come second in a Construction Skills competition in Denmark earlier this year.
He will be returning to Warrington Collegiate for some pre-competition training with Bricklaying tutor Rob Holmes later this month.
Paul Gould, Curriculum Manager for Construction and the Built Environment at Warrington Collegiate added: “I’m really proud of Ashley and his achievements. He’s a real inspiration for our students who are the next generation of the UK’s workforce. I recognised very early on in his training at Warrington Collegiate that Ashley has an exceptional talent and I know that with his dedication and commitment he has a great chance of winning gold.
“Competitions such as WorldSkills not only raise the profile of the construction industry but they also demonstrate the high level of skills training which is undertaken here at Warrington Collegiate.”
Ashley has received sponsorship from building suppliers Travis Perkins, house builders Redrow Homes and the college.
He also works for the family business, Peter Terron Brickwork Contracting Limited, as well as working on his degree at the University of Salford.
