Book sculptures go on exhibition

AN exhibition of “book sculptures” – works of art created from old, damaged books – has opened at Warrington’s Orford Jubilee Neighbourhood Hub.
The display has been created as part of community arts programme Creative Remedies, in partnership with leisure group LiveWire.
Old books, donated by LiveWire libraries across Warrington have been recycled and transformed into works of art.
The exhibition will remain at Orford until May 30 and will then go on tour around different LiveWire venues, libraries and neighbourhood hubs around the borough.
Creative Remedies is a programme of community arts and wellbeing activities that has been developed by the borough council’s mental health outreach team.
Currently they provide groups such as visual arts, photography, music, performing arts and multimedia activities in a range of neighbourhood venues. The aim of the groups is to allow people to improve their mental wellbeing by developing skills, structure and social contacts in an unthreatening friendly environment. Any adult in Warrington aged over 18 is welcome to attend a session.
Cllr Pat Wright, executive member for health, wellbeing and adult services at the council, said: “Creative Remedies is a brilliant scheme and in 2013 the team are looking to develop it even further, with new activities and groups, reaching out to different communities across the town.
“The group should be very proud of what they have created with this exhibition and it is exciting people will be able to see it on display”
Fiona Barry, community libraries manager at LiveWire, said: “It is a delight to see the libraries’ new books and old book sculptures sit side by side in this inspirational exhibition.”
Resident artist Kate Bufton and group members Colin Yates and Dean Hughes organised the exhibition.
Currently creative Remedies organise 16 different groups every week. The visual arts group takes place every Wednesday between 1-3pm at room 7 at the Pyramid Centre.
LiveWire libraries have workshops at Orford Park Library where members of the public can learn how to create book sculptures on Saturday, May 18, 1-3pm, for adults and Wednesday, May 22, 3.30-5.30pm for children.
