Communicating with the deaf

CARERS and family members keen to improve the way they communicate with deaf relatives are among the latest group to complete a popular sign language course in Warrington.
Deafness Support Network (DSN) is Cheshire’s leading support organisation for people with hearing loss and their families, delivering a wide range of services and support.
The charity has operated in Warrington for more than 30 years and has been running British Sign Language (BSL) courses and awareness sessions in the town since the 1980s, involving more than 1,000 people of all ages and from all walks of life.
BSL is a language in its own right with its own vocabulary and structure of grammar, expressed through movement of the hands, body, face and head.
The DSN courses are delivered at Warrington Deaf Centre in Wilson Patten Street. Eight people recently completed the BSL Level 1 course.
Weekly sessions of three hours over a 30-week period with small groups enables delegates to learn the basics of BSL and acquire a small vocabulary of everyday-signed words.
BSL Level 2 and 3 courses are also delivered and help individuals to build their skills.
