Remembering the IRA bombing

AN invitation has gone out to all Warrington residents to join in commemorative events taking place next month to mark the 20th anniversary of the IRA bombing in Bridge Street.
Wednesday March 20 will mark the anniversary of the bombing, which caused the deaths of two young boys, three-year-old Johnathan Ball and 12-year-old Tim Parry and injured many other people.
The people and the town of Warrington were profoundly affected by the shocking event, but received widespread respect for the way the community responded to the event so positively.
The council and The Tim Parry Johnathan Ball Foundation, set up by Tim’s parents Colin and Wendy Parry, have been working together with people and organisations who were affected at the time and who have played a part in helping Warrington to move forward to plan the anniversary events.
On Saturday March 16, a civic event led by the Mayor, Cllr Steve Wright, will take place in Bridge Street between 12noon-12.45pm. The ceremony will include speeches from dignitaries and community representatives, choir performances, readings and a one minute silence.
There will be public viewing areas at Market Gate, where the ceremony can be watched on a large screen, and along Bridge Street. Large crowds are anticipated on the day.
The civic event will be followed by a community reflection event at the Foundation’s Peace Centre from 2pm-5pm.
All relevant information will be available on the borough council’s website at www.warrington.gov.uk/newsroom
