CHESHIRE Police and Crime Commissioner John Dwyer is urging people to make sure they do not fall for a scam on the sale of poppy goods.
Mr Dwyer, who is also president of the Royal British Legion, Nantwich branch, says people should only buy from the official Royal British Legion website. He said that bogus companies are selling poppy goods on-line.
He said: “It may not be the time of year when people are thinking of buying a poppy to support our fallen forces but this scam shows that criminals are prepared to capitalise on people’s goodwill.
“I think it is disgraceful that people are giving their money in good faith thinking that it is going to a good cause. I urge people not to buy them.”
The scam had been reported the Trading Standards by people in Cheshire.
Phil Reade, vice chairman of Cheshire Royal British Legion, said: “I am appalled that unscrupulous companies are prepared to sell poppy badges, mugs, T-shirts and even wall plaques on-line for profit.
“The Royal British Legion campaign tirelessly throughout the year, not just at Armistice Day in November, to support our armed forces past and present.”
