Police tackle fraud and internet crime

POLICE in Warrington are taking part in a national scheme to help tackle the growing problem of fraud and internet crime.
Cheshire Police will launch its Action Fraud campaign on Monday February 18.
The national campaign, launched in 2009, is designed to handle many thousands of reports of fraud and internet crime each month. It uses new ways of collating and gathering information to detect crimes and build up information on fraudsters.
From the launch date victims of fraud should contact Action Fraud via the national number or website. Anyone reporting fraud to Cheshire Police will be referred to Action Fraud unless the victim is perceived to be vulnerable or an immediate police response will result in the offender being caught.
By April all police forces in England and Wales will be directing the public to this service.
Detective Superintendent Geraint Jones said: “The purpose of Action Fraud is twofold: firstly to make it easier for the public to report fraud and secondly, to develop intelligence, look at trends and enable a better investigation to come out of the process. The result will be a speedier, more intelligent and more efficient process.
“Fraud is a serious crime. It impacts on all kinds of communities, in particular, vulnerable people. This type of criminality needs to be clamped down upon and the offenders need to be brought to justice.”
It is estimated that fraud costs the British economy £73 billion every year. This includes anything from simple online scams to organised gangs targeting vulnerable people.
Action Fraud can be contacted on 0300 123 2040 or online through www.actionfraud.police.uk

  1. My company received this call today from 01925 423933 (Warrington) asking do I wish to support the police is crime prevention by paying £70 for a half page spread. After saying no she carried on with her sales pitch with me just sat there laughing saying no. I asked her for a copy of the magazine and she said it new and doesn’t come out until October so no you can’t see it. ha-ha I said so you want me to pay for something that 1, I’ve never seen, 2 I’ve never heard of and 3, doesn’t come out until October and 4, from someone who could be anyone over the phone, to which see said we are the police! Beware people, to me it was a good form of entertainment for 10 minutes on the phone but some people may be sucked into this scam.
