WARRINGTON Nature Conservation Forum (WNCF) is urging local residents to take part in the annual RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch this weekend, (Jan 26/27).
Now in its 30th year the number of people of all ages taking part has grown to over half a million the survey allows the RSPB to monitor trends and helps them to understand how birds are doing and as a consequence wildlife in general.
WNCF Secretary Helen Lacy said: “It’s a great way to start watching birds and you can do it from your window at home or your local Warrington parks. By simply clicking on the RSPB web site http://www.rspb.org.uk/birdwatch/ you will find all the information you need, bird charts, what they like to eat, how to make your garden bird friendly etc. and it’s FREE.
“Don’t worry if you don’t spot too many in the first hour you can always try another place at another time. “
Chair Cllr Geoff Settle saw none during his first hour in 2011 but persevered and was rewarded with a number of sightings later in the day during a 2nd hour.
He said: “Since then I have put up bird feeders and I now have lots of different birds visiting my garden. They include a cheeky robin, that chases other robins away, lots of blue and great tits and more recently half a dozen greenfinches that always arrive together and take turns to keep watch. I’ve even seen a Buzzard perched on my fence and all whilst I have been stood at the kitchen sink washing the dishes’.
The WNCF would like to read about your Big Garden Birdwatch experience, just log on to their Facebook page and tell them how you got on.
They will publish the best comments and photos of birds you have seen in their Spring Newsletter
