Nature meeting – at a power station

NATURE lovers and conservationists from Warrington got together for a meeting – at a power station.
The unusual venue gave members of Warrington Nature Conservation Forum (WNCF)an opportunity to visit the new nature trail at the Fiddler’s Ferry Power Station.
Vice chairman Roger Lamming said: “It was a great venue. We had a packed agenda covering a wide variety of topics, a lively members’ soap box, updates on local nature partnership and nature improvement areas, conference reports and to cap it off mince pies and a copy of the 50th edition of the WNCF newsletter.”
There were illustrated talks from Croft’s Phil Brighton on how to create your own wildlife garden in 18 months while Eric Fletcher from RECORD explained the patterns of wildlife data members have been contributing to on a daily basis.
He said: “WNCF members have made significant contributions to the database which is giving us a greater understanding of Warrington’s biodiversity.”
Brian Martin, a former WNCF chairman RSPB member, told of a new landmark coming to Warrington’s Centre Park soon.
He said: “I am very pleased to announce that in the New Year, Warrington will hopefully have the North of England’s first Swift tower.”
General Secretary Helen Lacy commented: “Brian has worked tirelessly for many years to produce annual Swift surveys.
“His work in Warrington has added greatly to understanding the species and the protection of its habitat. The tower will be a fitting tribute to his achievements in this area.”
She added: “There are plenty of events taking place during the winter months and they will be advertised on our popular Facebook Site so there is no excuse not to walk off that Christmas Pudding.”
She challenged everyone to visit Moore Nature Reserve and see it they could spot the elusive Bittern or Smews (visiting from Scandinavia and Russia).
She also asked everyone to take part in the RSPB’s Big Garden Bird Watch taking place at the end of January. More details at www.rspb.org.uk/birdwatch

Unfortunately I wasn’t able to make it but by all accounts above and on the Facebook Site – it was a great morning and a good opportunity to see the new nature trail at Fiddler’s Ferry. I think that we were the first group to have a tour and hopefully we will be invited back in the future to see how it has developed.
