A NEW source of help and support is now available for vulnerable people living in cold homes in Warrington this winter.
Warrington Borough Council has recently secured £100 000 from the Department of Health’s (DoH) Warm Homes Healthy People scheme to fund urgent heating repairs in the borough as winter sets in.
The Warrington Warm Homes Fund will be used to carry out much needed work in the homes of older people and those with health problems by repairing heating and gas fires, installing additional radiators and carrying out draught proofing.
Cllr Pat Wright (pictured), executive member for health, wellbeing and adult services at the council said: “Ensuring that local people, especially the elderly and vulnerable, have the support they need to keep warm through the installation of simple things like insulation and using more efficient heating systems is hugely important to the council and all partners in this project.
“The cold has a massive impact on people’s health and wellbeing. It can cause respiratory problems, worsen arthritis symptoms and lead to increased falls and accidents which places a huge pressure on the NHS and the council as well.”
Work will also be done with NHS Warrington, the Citizens Advice Bureau, Golden Gates Housing Trust, Warrington Disability Partnership, the Red Cross and other groups to put in place a team of warm-hearted volunteers to support this work in the community. This activity will be funded by the DoH monies as well.
