Council urged to take control

WARRINGTON Borough Council is being urged to take advantage of a government scheme to promote sustainable communities which could involve the transfer of powers and public money from central to local control.
Liberal Democrat opposition leader Cllr Ian Marks is putting a motion to tonight’s (Monday) meeting of the full council asking that the authority use the opportunities presented by the Sustainable Communities Act.
Cllr Marks (pictured) says the Act – which received all party support when it became law in 2007, gives councils the power to make proposals to central government for action and assistance to promote sustainable communities – and which may involve the transfer of powers and money from the government to the council.
He says the term “sustainable communities” is a broad one that may involve the improvement of the local economy, protection of the environment, promotion of social inclusion and wellbeing and participation in civic, political and democratic activity.
Earlier this year, the regulations were changed to make it easier for councils to submit proposals.
Cllr Marks asks the council to decide to consider using the opportunities presented by the Act by responding to the government’s invitation for proposals for action and assistance.

  1. so does that mean that our councillors will have control over loads more money???? OMG they waste what they get now, heaven help us if they are let loose with a blank cheque book….. first thing they will vote for is extra allowances for themselves to cover the extra workload of all that spending they will have to do….

  2. Power without restrictions….Ian Mark’s dream…the people of Warrington’s nightmare! He says ” the term “sustainable communities” is a broad one that MAY involve the improvement of the local economy, protection of the environment, promotion of social inclusion and wellbeing and participation in civic, political and democratic activity.”

But then again it MAY NOT! The last time Ian Marks had any power in this town I didn’t notice much “protection of the environment,” or ” promotion of social inclusion and wellbeing” and as for “participation in civic, political and democratic activity.” well, really!!!! with the ‘decisions behind closed doors’ habits of his Executive board that’s a joke!!!
