Companies charge for free service

COMPANIES offering to help homeowners get their council tax reduced are currently operating in Warrington – and charging a fee for a service which is available free.
The borough council has issued advice after being made aware of the activities of the companies.
Council tax banding for properties in Warrington is set by the Valuation Office Agency (VOA) in Liverpool.
A council spokeswoman said: “We have recently been made aware of some companies offering to help local homeowners to reduce the amount of council tax they pay by writing to the VOA, on their behalf and for a fee, to apply for the band of a property to be reduced.
“If you feel that your property is incorrectly banded then you can contact the VOA directly to request a review or reassessment of your home for free.
“You can also check the banding of other properties in your street online at www.voa.gov.uk or by phoning 03000 501501.
“The types and size of properties in residential streets can vary so bandings should reflect this.”
