Flooding update: two schools closed

WARRINGTON’S William Beamont High School has been forced to close due to flooding.
The boiler room was today flooded – meaning the school and specialist sports college in Long Lane could not be heated and was without hot water.
Head teacher Maggie Williams said: “The process of pumping out water and assessing the damage now needs to take place and the school must remain closed until that has happened.
“Updates will be posted on the school’s website, the council’s website and distributed via the text messaging service daily with the latest information.”
An opening evening planned for tomorrow (Thursday) has been postponed.
Details of the re-arranged date will be made known as soon as possible.
Meadowside Primary School, in Clough Avenue, Orford, has also closed because of flooding.
Head teacher Paula Wilkinson said: “The only way to access the school was wearing wellies or waders. The toilets were also starting to back up but we are working on the problem and hoping to get the school opened again as soon as possible.”
The borough council said high risk areas for flooding were at Great Sankey, Longford and Dallam.
More than 3,500 sandbags have been distributed across the borough in the last 48 hours to safeguard homes and businesses from flood water. All gully wagons and pumping units are out at key locations.
More than 130 incidents of flooding have been reporter and have been responded to with a combination of sandbags, road closures, flood warning signs and temporary traffic management measures to keep key roads open.
Flood defence operations in Densham Avenue have removed more than 2000 cubic metres over the last 24 hours, a council spokeswoman said.
