Youngsters discuss concerns with MP

A SPECIAL meeting to discuss issues of concern to young people – such as cheaper transport and more jobs – was held with Warrington North MP Helen Jones.
Member of Youth Parliament for Warrington North Joel Davies and his deputy Amin Abdelhamid met the MP to raise concerns from their constituents.
During the session at Orford Youth Base topics included lowering the legal voting age to 16, making public transport cheaper and more accessible, better job opportunities and apprenticeships for young people, and the cutting of youth services.
Joel said: “I promised all those who voted for me that I’d get their views heard at the top and this meeting with Helen Jones enabled me to do this. It was an amazing opportunity. Helen really listened to what I had to say.”
Helen said: “We covered a whole host of topics from lowering the voting age to 16 to what can be done to tackle long-term youth unemployment which is up in Warrington by 600 per cent compared to last year.
“What I took away from our discussion was just how engaged Joel and Amin are with the really important issues facing young people in our town. I look forward to meeting with them again to see how their campaigns are developing.”
The UK Youth Parliament allows young people aged 11 to 18 to have a say on national issues that affect them. It is made up of about 400 Members of the Youth Parliament, each representing around 10,000 young people from their local area.
