New domestic violence service for town

BRITAIN’S largest provider of safe houses for women and children has won a two-year contract to run the new Warrington Independent Domestic Violence and Abuse Service.
Refuge – which claims to be supporting more than 2,000 survivors of domestic violence on any given day – has been appointed by Warrington Domestic Abuse Partnership.
The organisation will provide support, information and options to women and men
who live in Warrington and are at risk from domestic abuse.
Refuge also runs the Freephone 24-hour National Domestic Violence Helpline in partnership with Women’s Aid.
A spokeswoman for Refuge in Warrington gave an example of how the organisation can help a client.
She said: “Catherine survived violence and abuse. The turning point came when she contacted Refuge and received help from someone who understood the situation.. She was supported through the criminal justice system and said she wouldn’t have had the courage to do this without the support of Refuge.”
Cllr Pat Wright, Warrington Borough Council’s executive member for health, wellbeing and adult services, is encouraging Warrington residents affected by domestic abuse to contact the service.
She said: “If you or you know someone who would benefit from these valuable services please do not hesitate to get in touch because there is excellent, specialist support and advice available to help people.”
The Warrington Domestic Abuse Partnership is a multi agency group that sits within the council’s children and young people’s services.
Kath O’Dwyer, executive director for the services, feels the contract will provide great benefit to survivors of domestic abuse.
She said: “The award of the contract to Refuge is a very positive development and an essential support service to those experiencing domestic abuse”.
During the autumn, monthly drop-in sessions at key locations will be provided in Warrington to enable the service to reach more people.
