Fledgling RL club takes wing

A NEW junior Rugby League club in Warrington got off to a good start with a promising turn-out for its first training session.
The fledgling Oakwood Steelers are now training on Thursday evenings and hope to play a few friendly matches before entering a league in March next year.
Fifteen youngsters who had never previously been involved in organised Rugby League turned up for the first session.
The session took in many aspects of the game while also serving as a “get to know you” session for those previously strangers to each other.
Secretary Phil James said: “We are looking forward to seeing our numbers increase as word of mouth spreads around the area.”
Head coach Josh Woods said after the session: “I am very happy with the work the children put in and the amount we achieved – it was a very good session.”
The club’s aim is to provide competitive junior rugby for children current in school years 4, 5 and 6 who want to play but have not been able to find a club or may be intimidated by joining an established club.
They train on a pitch between Steel Street and Oakwood Avenue, just off Gorsey Lane and Orford Road.
Further details are available from Phil on 078059 16040.
