A diamond bawming of the thorn

THE annual “Bawming the Thorn” festival at Appleton Thorn will have a Diamond Jubilee theme this year.
A fancy dress parade showing off fashion through the 60 years of the Queen’s reign will form part of the event on Saturday, June 16.
Volunteers are still be sought to help organise the day, set out the field and, importantly, clear up afterwards.
All helpers will be invited to relax afterwards at a family barbeque at the village hall, which will be open to all.
Anyone who would like to help is asked to email [email protected] or contact Lisa Baker on 07870 695 177.
In its current form, the “Bawming” ceremony dates from the 19th century when it was part of the village “Walking Day.” It disappeared in the 1930s but was revived by the then head of Appleton Thorn School, Bob Jones, in the 1970s.
“Bawming” relates to the decorating of the thorn tree in the village with ribbons, after which, costumed children dance around the tree singing the “Bawming” song.
According to local legend, the thorn at Appleton Thorn grew from a cutting of the Holy Thorn at Glastonbury, which was said to have sprung from the staff of Joseph of Arimathea.
