TWO Warrington companies are competing in the finals of the prestigious Big Chip Awards after being shortlisted for excelling in the use of creative, digital and information technology.
The shortlisted companies include Space 48, a digital agency based in Warrington, who are on the list for Best On-line Brand Development with their Optimise Internet re-brand and Hogrocket, an independent video game developer also based in the town, who are in the running for Best Use of Gaming for their game, Tiny Invaders.
The 2012 awards have attracted a record number of 261 entries from across 152 digital and creative organisations and freelancers from across the whole of the region, with this year’s Big Chip Awards set to be the most exciting yet.
The awards will be judged by an expert panel including Jon Myers from Yahoo, Herb Kim from Codeworks, Thinking Digital, Ajaz Ahmed, founder of Freeserve and Dr David Kreps from Salford University, and will be chaired by Michael Nutley, former editor-in-chief of New Media Age. This year’s special guest judge is David Sproxton, co-founder of Aardman Animations.
This year there are 16 categories, including the Little Chip Student award and Best Use of Gaming, a new category for 2012. The international category will offer the Big Chip International Award for Innovation, while special awards including the Anthony Wilson Original Modern Award and the Grand Prix will be chosen from the shortlist and presented on the night. The Tasty Website Award, decided by popular vote, will also be decided on the night.
The awards are organised by trade association Manchester Digital, with support from regional bodies such as Liverpool Vision and Codeworks in the North East. The awards are open to any organisation in the North that has designed or commissioned any digital projects in the past year, and this year’s prestigious award ceremony will be hosted by award-winning North East comedian, Jason Cook.
Chair of Manchester Digital, Shaun Fensom, said: “This year’s awards have seen more entries than ever before and as a result of extending the Big Chips right across the North we have yet another fantastic shortlist, with an even higher standard of submissions.”
The creativity, passion and ingenuity displayed by this year’s entrants demonstrate how the digital sector has continued to grow and develop in the North, despite the tough economic climate.”
The Big Chip Awards will be announced at a luxurious awards dinner at The Palace Hotel in Manchester on Thursday, July 5.
