DIY litter pickers get busy

RESIDENTS young and old joined Warrington Wolves mascot “Wolfie” in tidying up their neighbourhood.
The “Love Longford – Big Tidy Up” was organised by Golden Gates Housing Trust (GGHT) to help people get involved in clearing up their local area.
The event brought to together a number of people who were prepared to volunteer their own time to remove rubbish and litter from the streets of Longford.
Staff from GGHT were also out and about to lend a hand and provide all those taking part with bags and litter pickers.
GGHT’s Longford Project co-ordinator Jane Lauchlan said: “It was great to see so many local residents working together, despite some pretty poor weather, to improve their area.
“The group have made a real difference to the local area and seeing them out with their jackets on has sent out a positive message to the rest of the community that dropping litter is simply not on”.

  1. This is another great initiative and congratulations to GGHT for encouraging and giving support. There are more and more groups springing up and I would like to thank Warrington Worldwide Web for promoting them throughout the town. I received a number offers for my little scheme where I give a free litter picker to anyone who wants to join in and I hope that people think we are making a small change in Cinnamon Brow and surrounding area.

Street scene are working hard, the waste, recycling officers ‘Phil the Legend’ has run workshops in every school in Warrington and more bins have been put in place. He is doing a brilliant job but needs to be backed up by parents reinforcing the message.

AND yet people still keep dropping litter – usually right next to bins – I know because I’m always picking the dam stuff up – (700 carriers bags in 6 months) – broken glass at kiddies play areas from the park drinkers, food cartons tossed out of cars, sweet wrappers and pop bottles discarded on paths as children walk home from school after visiting shops!! AND don’t get me started on Dog Fouling – we seem to be slipping and sliding in the stuff at an increasing rate.

Personally I don’t think that we should put signs up threatening fines but we should take stronger action!!!
