Arty women who inspire

WARRINGTON Museum and Art Gallery is holding an exhibition of the work of 15 women artists from 10 different countries, as part of Inspirational Women’s Month.
The exhibition celebrates the contributions women have made to both pop surrealism and urban fine art and explores the cross-over between these two movements for the first time in the UK. It runs until July 7.
Working in underground art movements, the women featured in the exhibition have forged names for themselves by pushing the boundaries of contemporary art, experimenting with new mediums, ideas and visual concepts. Individually they have enhanced the overall direction of these underground movements, and as a collective they have changed the way women are viewed in urban culture today, according to the museum.
Much of the work on display has been specifically produced for the Warrington exhibition and has not been seen elsewhere.
Pop surrealism has its origins in the 1970s hot rod culture and underground comics but has grown over the decades and become a vital and exciting art movement in its own right. Many of the artists do not have the traditional training in fine art but have come from illustration, tattooing and comic books.
Warrington law firm Forshaw Davies Ridgway are sponsoring the exhibition and FDR marketing manager Joanna Barton explained: “This is the first time we have sponsored Warrington Museum and we are delighted to be associated with such an exciting, vibrant art exhibition.
“Our family law partners are all highly skilled women and it seems very fitting for us to be promoting a collection produced by such a dynamic group of female contemporary artists.”
