OVER a period of some 21 months, a woman falsely claimed benefit totalling more than £9,000, magistrates were told at Warrington.
Elizabeth Hands, aged 31, of Small Crescent, Orford admitted failing to declare her partner had moved in to live with her and that he was in full time employment.
The court heard the woman falsely claimed over £9,500 in benefits from 12 September 2009 to 30 May 2011. She was overpaid housing benefit of £3099.70, council tax benefit of £942.82 and income support of £5493.13.
She was ordered to repay the overpaid benefits and was sentenced to a community order of 80 hours unpaid work and ordered to pay £100 costs.
After the hearing, Adrian Webster, the council’s benefits manager, said: “Every day in the UK over 200 benefit thieves are caught. The clear message is – if you commit benefit fraud you will be caught.”
