School cycling grant secured

WARRINGTON has secured a Government grant to continue the popular Bikeability cycle proficiency scheme in local schools
It will provide funding for all 10-year-old pupils to be trained by fully qualified instructors over the next 12 months.
Cllr Linda Dirir, the borough council’s executive member for highways, transportation and climate change, fully supports the scheme.
She said: “The Bikeability programme gives children the training and knowledge to cycle safely on our roads. This valuable training not only ensures they have an important lifeskill to keep them safe but also means they can get around in a sustainable and active way.”
The scheme is already very popular at schools across Warrington.
Emma Perkins, Key Stage 2 manager at St Barnabas CE Primary said: “We’ve been using the Bikeability scheme for the last three years and think it is a wonderful programme. Our children have benefited so much, making them much more confident and safer on the roads. It also raises their own self esteem by achieving something new.”
The council is also offering free cycle training for adults to ensure that they have the skills to cycle to work or college or simply enjoy a ride out in the fresh air.
Freewheeling is for anyone aged 16 and over who lives, studies or works in Warrington. For more information contact Lesley McAllister on 01925 443249 or go to the Freewheeling website www.bikeright.co.uk/freewheeling

  1. I think that this is brilliant news, I passed a group of young primary school riders passing under the railway bridge on Orford Road, near the Sun Centre. They had very sensibly dismounted and were walking on the pavement – the simple reason being it is difficult for two vehicles to pass each. They were all in high vizz yellow jackets. Hopefully these youngsters will be cycling to school instead of being ferried there. Well done all involved.
