Facelift for housing estates

A WALL was demolished at Warrington – to mark the start of a multi-milllion £ improvement scheme for the town’s biggest housing area.
Staff from Golden Gates Housing Trust (GGHT) were joined by local councillors, local resident Roy Humphreys and mascot Ivor Goodsite at the ceremonial wall demolition at Longford.
Over the next 12 months, new walls, block paved driveways and gates will be going up in the Longford and Orford areas of Warrington.
GGHT will be working with Apollo Property Services and Bramall Construction to demolish the old “Castle Walls” in both areas, as they have reached the end of their lifespan.
They will be replaced with traditional brick walls – and planting will also be carried out.
Improvements to footways, vehicle access and street lighting will also be carried out, in partnership with the borough council.
Mascot Ivor is used to engage with a younger audience to encourage safety on and around construction sites and to promote all that is positive about the UK construction industry.
The improvement works form part of the Longford Quality of Life project. As part of the works there will be a number of employment, training and apprentice opportunities that will be created and targeted at local residents.
Chairman of Longford Residents Association Roy Humphreys, said: “I was proud to be on hand as the first brick was demolished from one of the Castle Walls. It will be great to see these improvements being made and we all look forward to seeing the finished work.”
Chairman of the GGHT Board Roy Smith, said: “I look forward to seeing this work progress over the coming months and breathing new life into the Longford and Old Orford areas. The improvements that we are undertaking will make a huge difference for local residents and we are also committed to ensuring that they benefit from the opportunities it will create to support people back into work.”
Deputy leader of the council Mike Hannon said: “I hope that the local residents will recognise the efforts that are going into improving the appearance of their area and will help to maintain the quality for many years to come.”
