Litter blitz on woods and parks

COMMUNITY groups, local councillors, police officers, church and schools groups and cub-scouts, from East and West Warrington, joined forces to combat litter in woods, parks and hedgerows, helping to clear an enormous 91 bags of litter.
In Oakwood and Gorse Covert, two teams led by local organiser Nigel Balding, founder of Small Woods of Oakwood Partnership (SWOOP), and supported by Stronger Together in Warrington, targeted Oakwood Woods and Gorse Covert Mounds at Risley.
Nigel said: “Our team of 10 people had a very productive event clearing out 14 big bags of rubbish from Oakwood Woods including three broken blue bins and a variety of wheels, pipes and bits of metal. Some of this litter has been bugging me for several months and it’s a great feeling to have helped to removed it.”
In Gorse Covert, the “Friends of Gorse Covert Mounds” carried out the third annual Spring tidy up.
With a record turn-out of 18 people including two police officers, they collected 10 big bags, one traffic cone and one large piece of metal.
In Warrington West, a team of 27 local volunteers, from “Clean up my Community-Warrington”, led by local organiser David Parr, dived into hedgerows and brooks surrounding Asda, Westbrook and managed to collect a massive 63 bags of litter, together with discarded traffic cones and road signs.
They were joined by a film crew from Penketh High School, who videoed the day’s events as part of their Young Enterprise project.
David said: “The response from local residents has been fantastic. Everyone has just got stuck in, and removing this huge quantity of historic litter, improves the appearance of the area for us all”
