£1.7m for New Homes Bonus scheme

WARRINGTON is set to receive almost £1.7 million funding thanks to the government’s New Homes Bonus scheme – the 5th highest share for the North West.
The New Homes Bonus scheme sees the government provide additional funding for new homes by match funding the additional council tax raised for those new homes and empty properties brought back into use, with an additional amount for affordable homes for the following six years.
The amount allocated to each local authority is based on past increases in housing supply and long term empty properties brought back into use. In Warrington from 2010-2011, 530 additional homes were built of which 291 of these were affordable and 137 long term empty properties had been brought back into use.
Councillor David Keane, (pictured) Executive Member for Environment and Public Protection said: “At a time when local authorities are receiving substantially less funding and having to make very difficult choices, this funding boost is excellent news for Warrington and has been included in our financial plans for the future. The bonus we have received reflects the exceptional work the council and partners have done to increase the number of homes built in the town and tackle long term empty properties. We aim to continue to build on these achievements to create further growth in Warrington.”
