WORK has started on construction of the new Great Sankey Primary School at Warrington.
The Mayor, Cllr Mike Biggin, set the ball rolling with a turf-cutting ceremony at the Liverpool Road site.
It is expected the new school will be ready by October.
A modern building, designed for education in the 21st century, the school will incorporate the latest low energy systems, along with spacious classrooms and a range of inspirational educational educational facilities.
The new building, costing £4.8m will replace a number of smaller existing buildings, many of which are in poor condition and no longer fit for purpose.
But the original Victorian building which fronts Liverpool Road will be retained and put to good use.
Its new purpose is yet to be decided but a range of possibilities are being considered.
Cllr Colin Froggatt, the borough council’s executive member for children and young people’s services, said: “It’s fantastic that work has begun on the new buildings for Great Sankey Primary School.
“The new premises have been specially designed to be fit for education in the 21st century and environmentally friendly. I look forward to coming back to see the new school when it’s completed.”
