A WARRINGTON woman who obtained more than £8,000 in benefit while her husband was in full-time employment has been ordered to do 240 hours unpaid community work.
Barbara Porter, aged 36, has also been ordered to repay the money, plus £150 costs.
She pleaded guilty at Warrington Magistrates’ Court to two offences of deliberately failing to inform the borough council that she resided with her husband who was in full-time employment.
The court was told the woman was overpaid housing benefit amounting to £7,174.24 and council tax benefit amounting to £1,030.72.
After the hearing, Adrian Webster, the council’s benefits manager, said: “Every day in the UK over 200 benefit thieves are caught. The clear message is – if you commit benefit fraud you will be caught.”
