Police target drink drivers

POLICE are clamping down on drivers affected by drink or drugs over the festive season as part of a campaign to protect the public.
Cheshire Police are warning offenders that officers will be out and about in the Warrington area, safeguarding and protecting drivers.
Officers say that drunk drivers can be breathalysed any time of day – so anyone who has been drinking the night before is advised to get a lift to work rather than take a chance.
Figures show that last December in Cheshire there were 3,459 drivers stopped and asked to take the breath test, which resulted in 162 people being arrested. Of these 87 per cent were men and 13 per cent women.
More than half of those arrested were between the ages of 17 and 35, and police are sending a clear message to this age group that drink drivers will be targeted.
Road policing officers say they will be in the right place at the right time to arrest anyone and that people should watch out on Friday, Saturday and Sunday mornings.
Assistant Chief Constable Ruth Purdie said: “Our message is not don’t go out and enjoy yourself, but if you want to have a drink don’t get behind the wheel. You may think having a couple of drinks is fine, but any amount of alcohol impairs your driving.
“Think about how you are going to get home before you leave for your night out. Drinking and driving can turn your good night out ‘Ugly’ and you could end up cutting short your life or the life of another road user. You could end up losing your license or being sent to prison.”
