Conservation volunteers wanted

VOLUNTEERS are being sought for two important conservation projects to take place at Warrington this weekend
The Friends of Gorse Covert Mounds, a group of residents from Birchwood have organised the events to help maintain the local Woodland Trust site of Gorse Covert Mounds.
One project involves cutting back willow trees in a pond, near Inglewood Close, which is taking over the pond.
The other involves planting native British bluebells in the area.
Gorse Covert Mounds was created by a mid-1970s landscape project with mixed habitats on spoil mounds resulting from the demolition of the old Risley Royal Ordnance Faction.
Last year, the Friends carried out coppicing work at a pond which local residents say has made a big different, both for them and wildlife. The area is important for Great Crested Newts.
BTCV (British Trust for Conservation Volunteers) will be leading the event and anyone is welcome to join in. Tools will be provided but volunteers should wear working clothes and sturdy footwear.
Currently the site has no native British Bluebells so The Friends have arranged with the Mersey Forest and the Woodland Trust to have a bluebell planting session at the same time as coppicing.
Nigel Balding, chairman of the Friends Group said “In the absence of native British bluebells, the worry is that people will plant the Spanish garden variety, which may be pretty, but are not necessarily the best thing for natural woodland and its native flora and fauna. Once established, we are confident that bluebells will flourish in our maturing woodland.”
Anyone wanting to take part should meet at the car park on Gorse Covert Road, opposite Falstone Close on Saturday, either at 10.30 or 1.30pm. Details are available from Mr Balding on 07960 736 203.
